Clean Training, Better Jiu-Jitsu: Why Hygiene on the Mat Matters

Sportshygiene.com,

Whether you’re a seasoned grappler or just starting out, there’s one thing we all owe our training partners: good hygiene.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a close-contact sport. You’re rolling, sweating, and quite literally in each other’s space every session. Keeping yourself and your gear clean isn’t just a matter of courtesy, it’s essential for everyone’s health and safety.

What Good Hygiene Looks Like on the Mat:

  • Wash your gi or no-gi kit after every session. Not the next morning. Not after “one more class”.
  • Shower as soon as you can post-training, especially if you’ve been barefoot on the mats or sparring hard.
  • Keep fingernails and toenails short. No one wants accidental scratches or gouges.
  • Don’t train with open cuts, infections, or anything suspicious on your skin. Speak to your coach if you’re unsure.
  • Footwear off the mat. Footwear on everywhere else. No barefoot toilet trips. Ever.

We want RGA Buckingham to be a place that’s not only tough and technical, but clean and safe too. It’s how we show respect to the gym and each other.
