Gym Rules & Training Etiquette

Our gym rules help keep everyone safe, healthy and comfortable on the mats. Whether you are attending your first class or have trained for years, please follow these standards every time you visit.

A safe and welcoming place to train

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts rely on trust between teammates. Good hygiene, careful training and respect for others allow everyone to enjoy their sessions and progress safely.

Please read the following rules before attending class. Coaches may ask anyone who is unwell, wearing unsafe equipment or behaving inappropriately to sit out of training.

Ten rules every student should follow

These simple standards protect you, your teammates and the academy.

01

No shoes on the mat

Remove your shoes before stepping onto the training mats. Outdoor footwear carries dirt and bacteria into the training area.

02

No bare feet off the mat

Wear shoes or sliders whenever you leave the mat, especially when using the toilets or changing areas.

03

Remove jewellery

Remove rings, watches, necklaces, earrings and other jewellery before training to avoid injury to yourself or your partner.

04

Arrive clean

Maintain good personal hygiene and shower as soon as possible after every training session.

05

Wash your training kit

Gis, rashguards, shorts, belts and protective equipment should be clean and dry for every session.

06

Keep nails short

Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed and filed smoothly to reduce the risk of cuts and scratches.

07

Do not train when unwell

Stay away from training when you have an illness, sickness bug, infectious skin condition or uncovered wound.

08

Be aware of your space

Watch the people training around you. Move safely when pairs become too close and follow your coach's instructions.

09

Respect the academy

Treat the gym, equipment, coaches and other students with care. Leave all areas clean and tidy after use.

10

Arrive on time

Aim to arrive early enough to change and be ready when class begins. Tell your coach when unavoidable delays occur.

Safe training etiquette

Technical progress should never come at the expense of your training partner's safety.

Respect the tap

Release every submission immediately when your partner taps, verbally submits or shows signs of distress.

Use control, not force

Do not force techniques with strength or sudden movement. Ask your coach for help when a technique is not working.

Look after your partner

Match the pace and experience of the person you are training with, particularly beginners and younger students.

Tie back long hair

Secure long hair before training so that it does not obstruct you or become caught during techniques.

Listen to your coaches

Stop immediately when instructed and follow all safety guidance given during drilling, sparring and competition training.

Train with a positive attitude

Be supportive, patient and respectful. Everyone learns at a different pace and contributes to the team.

Not sure what to bring?
